Hello to anyone visiting my blog! I’m Bethany Giovannetti and my service dog is Sammy. Sammy is a golden retriever service dog who is super friendly. Sammy helps perform tasks for my seizures since I have epilepsy. This is my second year at Converse as a Music Education major. I’ve transferred from different colleges but I’ve enjoyed Converse the most. My primary instrument is the clarinet. I’ve played the clarinet for around 14 years. As a music education major, I’ve learned many different instruments. My favorites have been the oboe, the French horn, the flute, and the euphonium. I’m super excited to learn more about diverse cultures and their music in this class!
Current Go-To Music
My current favorite song is Numb Little Bug by Em Beihold. I love, love Em Beihold’s music! She always talks about deeply personal issues or sensitive subjects in her music. For warning, this song is about a sensitive topic. Numb Little Bug by Em Beihold is my current favorite song because I connect with the lyrics. This song is about how the singer felt numb when taking antidepressants for her anxiety. Em Beihold sings about her own personal experience in this song. I could relate to this song because of my own personal experience with taking antidepressants. Some of the antidepressants I was on for my anxiety did make me feel “numb” or that it sucked out my energy. Yikes! That got super personal. Anyways, Em Beihold does a good job of explaining in her lyrics how antidepressants can make you feel numb and out of energy sometimes. Also, even though this a sensitive topic, she keeps the song kind of upbeat which I enjoy. I recommend this song to anyone who has gone through this experience with taking antidepressants or if you’re just feeling “numb” and out of energy.
Music that I value
A song that I value is Firm Foundation (He Won’t) by Maverick City Music. I’ve listened to Maverick City Music over the years and have enjoyed their songs. Maverick City Music is a contemporary Christian worship group. This song’s main meaning is about Jesus being a firm foundation that won’t fail you or forsake you.
In the song Firm Foundation (He Won’t) it talks about the parable of the two builders in Matthew 7:24-27 from the Bible. If you don’t know the story, it’s kind of like the three little pigs story. So one wise man builds his house on rock which is a firm foundation while a foolish man builds his house on sand. The house of rock withstood winds, rains, and other things while the house of sand fell. The meaning behind this story is to have a firm foundation in God so you can withstand the troubles of this world.
I have always really liked the story of the two builders growing up. It was a fun lesson to learn in Bible school. But, growing up it has taught me that God can help me through all my struggles that come to pass because I have a firm foundation in God. This is why I love, love this song, Firm Foundation.
Music I haven’t connected to
A song I haven’t connected to is Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head) by Powfu. I have never heard of Powfu until I found this song. I found Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head) while scrolling through TikTok.
I haven’t connected to this piece of music because it is about a guy dying who is saying goodbye to his girlfriend. I cannot connect to this music because I am not dying nor do I have a significant other. Also, I don’t like coffee as the lyrics talk about making a cup of coffee.
Though I can empathize with the lyrics, it isn’t a song that I have had a connection to. This song is a beautiful yet sad piece but, I cannot connect to the lyrics. I do think that Death Bed has a simple melody that is easy to sing along to. The entire song has emotional mood to it but has a simple and sweet melody which is a little contradictory.
I do recommend others to listen to this song for yourself to see if you like it.
I just listened to Numb Little Bug! I had never heard of it before, but I actually think I've seen parts of it on Instagram. The instrumentation is fairly sparse, and I think that does a great job of directing attention to the lyrics. I really like the bass throughout the song. Also those lyrics :( very relatable though. It's going to be stuck in my head for the rest of day.
I listened to Firm Foundation! Ive just recently been looking into more christian contemporary like this one. Personally with me, I love these songs because there are so many layers and things going on. Not only the instrument but you can see the how moved everyone is with this piece, I love that! Definitely adding this one to my playlist!! :)
I recognized Numb Little Bug before, but I hadn't heard the entire song until now. I hadn't payed much attention to the lyrics when I would hear this song but after paying attention the lyrics are definitely very meaningful. I'm not super religious but religious music (especially Christian music) is always very beautiful, so I really enjoyed Firm Foundation. Death Bed is another song that I have heard but never payed attention to the lyrics, I don't really dislike it but it's not something I would listen to if I'm bored.
Hi Bethany and Sam! As you have, I found Death Bed (Coffee For Your Head) on TikTok. I truly never heard the lyrics for what they are, and previously, I thought it was a cool groove that gets annoying when it's played too much. I like coffee, but I am also not a fan of the lyrics of the song. It has an extremely catchy tune and beat though.
Hey Bethany. I didn't know you had played so many instruments. That's so cool. I love Firm Foundation. Having God and Music together to help you get through hard times is such a blessing. Also agree with Death Bed. I found that song many years ago and it just got so over used on social media. I think it's catchy but after a while it's just a little to much.
I remember when death bed was popular in 2020, and I absolutely adored the song. Now, I do not adore the song, whether or not I can relate to it. The original Beebadobee sample came from her song Coffee, which is, in my opinion, a much better song.
